Belize City Airport (BZE) to Hopkins Village: Every Option Compared

Christina Saldana • August 25, 2026

You’ve booked your flight to Belize, chosen Hopkins Village for your vacation, and now there’s one important question left:

How do you get from Belize City Airport (BZE) to Hopkins Village?

Hopkins is located on the Caribbean coast in southern Belize, approximately 129 km (80 miles) by road from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE). Unlike some destinations, you won’t simply walk outside the airport and catch a direct public bus to your hotel.

The good news is that getting to Hopkins is relatively easy once you understand your options.

You can take a private shuttle, shared shuttle, domestic flight to Dangriga, rental car, airport taxi, or public bus combination. The best choice depends on your budget, arrival time, group size, and how much convenience you want after your flight.

1. Private Shuttle from Belize City Airport to Hopkins

For most travelers visiting Hopkins, booking a private airport shuttle is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to reach the village. Bucket List Tours & Transfers Belize offers private, door-to-door transportation from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) directly to your accommodation in Hopkins.

After you collect your luggage and clear customs, your driver will meet you at the airport and begin the journey south. There’s no need to travel into Belize City, change vehicles in Dangriga, or worry about navigating unfamiliar roads.

The drive from Belize City to Hopkins typically takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, and any stops requested along the way.

Why travelers choose a private shuttle

A private transfer is especially convenient if you:

  • Are visiting Belize for the first time
  • Are traveling with children
  • Have several pieces of luggage
  • Are traveling as a couple or group
  • Don't want to drive after flying
  • Want door-to-door transportation
  • Want the flexibility to request a restroom or grocery stop

Another advantage is that the journey itself becomes part of your introduction to Belize.

As you travel south, you’ll leave the busier Belize City area behind and begin seeing more of Belize's countryside, communities and tropical landscape.

Our recommendation

If your priority is getting from the airport to Hopkins with as little hassle as possible, a pre-arranged private shuttle is usually the most convenient choice.

Guests staying at Caribbean Shores Bed and Breakfast can contact us before arrival for recommendations and assistance coordinating transportation to Hopkins.

2. Shared Shuttle to Hopkins

A shared shuttle is another option, particularly for solo travelers who don't mind traveling with other passengers.

Instead of having the vehicle exclusively for your party, you share the shuttle with travelers heading in the same direction.

This can reduce your transportation cost, but there is a trade-off: your departure and arrival times may depend on other passengers.

You may have to wait for another flight to arrive, and the shuttle may make additional stops to drop off guests.

Shared shuttle pros

  • Generally less expensive for one traveler
  • No need to drive
  • Air-conditioned transportation is commonly available
  • Can provide hotel or accommodation drop-off

Shared shuttle cons

  • Fixed or semi-fixed departure schedules
  • Possible waiting time at the airport
  • Additional passenger pickups or drop-offs
  • Less flexibility for stops
  • May take longer than a private transfer

If you are traveling alone and your schedule matches a shared departure, this can be a good middle ground between a private shuttle and public transportation.

For couples or small groups, however, it is worth comparing the total shared-shuttle price against the price of a private transfer.

3. Fly from BZE to Dangriga, Then Transfer to Hopkins

Another option that many first-time visitors may not realize is available is taking a short domestic flight from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) to Dangriga, the closest town to Hopkins with a commercial airstrip.

Domestic flights are available with Maya Island Air and Tropic Air and can be booked directly online. The flight from BZE to Dangriga takes approximately 15 minutes, making it a quick way to travel south.

Once you arrive at the Dangriga Airport, you’ll still need ground transportation to Hopkins Village. The shuttle ride from Dangriga to Hopkins takes approximately 35 minutes and can take you directly to your accommodation.

While the flight itself is short, remember to factor in check-in, waiting time, baggage collection, and your transfer from Dangriga to Hopkins when planning your overall travel time.

One important tip

It is recommended to schedule your domestic flight from BZE to Dangriga approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour after your international flight is scheduled to arrive. This allows time to clear immigration and customs, collect your luggage, and check in for your domestic flight. Allowing enough connection time can make your arrival and transfer to Hopkins much smoother.

Is flying faster?

In the air, absolutely.

Door-to-door, the difference isn't always as dramatic.

You'll need to:

  1. Clear immigration and customs at BZE.
  2. Check in for your domestic flight.
  3. Wait for the flight to depart.
  4. Fly to Dangriga.
  5. Collect your luggage.
  6. Meet your driver or taxi.
  7. Drive from Dangriga to Hopkins.

This option works particularly well when the domestic flight schedule connects conveniently with your international arrival.

4. Rent a Car at Belize International Airport

If you're comfortable driving in another country and plan to explore Belize independently, renting a car can be a great option.

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport has multiple rental-car companies located at or near the airport.

Having your own vehicle gives you considerably more freedom once you're in Hopkins.

You can explore nearby attractions, drive into Dangriga, visit restaurants outside walking distance, or incorporate Hopkins into a larger Belize road trip.

A rental car makes sense if:

  • You're staying in Belize for several days
  • You plan to visit multiple destinations
  • You prefer exploring independently
  • You're comfortable navigating unfamiliar roads
  • You don't want to depend on transfers for longer trips

Before renting

Ask your rental company about insurance, roadside assistance and any restrictions concerning where the vehicle can be driven.

It is also a good idea to download your route before leaving the airport rather than relying entirely on mobile service.

And remember: driving times in Belize can be different from what visitors are accustomed to at home. Give yourself plenty of time and avoid rushing.

5. Take an Airport Taxi to Hopkins

Taxis are available at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

The airport's official passenger information states that airport taxi service is available outside the terminal, making a taxi one of the options for travelers who haven't arranged transportation in advance.

A taxi can take you directly to Hopkins, but for a journey this long, we recommend confirming the total fare before leaving the airport.

Ask whether the quoted price is for the entire vehicle or per passenger and whether any additional stops are included.

Taxi vs. pre-booked private shuttle

Both can provide direct transportation.

The main difference is planning.

With a pre-arranged shuttle, your transportation is organized before you land. Your provider already knows your flight information, arrival date and destination.

An airport taxi can be useful when your transportation plans change unexpectedly or you arrive without a transfer reservation.

6. Public Bus: The Cheapest Way to Get to Hopkins

Yes, you can reach Hopkins using Belize's public bus system, and it is one of the most affordable transportation options for budget-conscious travelers. However, it is also the most time-consuming and requires several steps.

There is no direct public bus from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) to Hopkins Village. First, you will need to take a taxi from the airport to the bus terminal in Belize City. At the terminal, purchase a ticket for a southbound bus traveling from Belize City toward Punta Gorda and let the driver or conductor know that you need to get off at Hopkins Junction.

The bus travels from Belize City to Belmopan, where it stops at the terminal to drop off and pick up passengers. From Belmopan, it continues south to the Dangriga bus terminal for another passenger stop before continuing along the highway toward Hopkins Junction.

Once you arrive at Hopkins Junction, keep in mind that you are not yet in Hopkins Village. The junction is several miles from the village, so you will need additional transportation to reach your accommodation. Taxis may be available around the junction when buses arrive, but availability can vary. While hitchhiking is sometimes used as an alternative, we do not recommend it for visitors, especially those unfamiliar with the area.

When you include the taxi from BZE to the Belize City bus terminal, waiting time, bus connections and stops along the route, the entire journey can take approximately 6 to 7 hours.

Taking the bus can be a good option if you're traveling on a tight budget, have plenty of time and don't mind a longer journey. However, we do not recommend this option for travelers whose international flights arrive in the afternoon, as bus schedules and connections may make it difficult to reach Hopkins before later in the evening.

If convenience and travel time are more important, consider arranging a private shuttle directly from BZE to Hopkins instead.

The bus may work well if:

  • You're traveling on a tight budget
  • You have minimal luggage
  • You're comfortable using local transportation
  • You arrive early enough to make the necessary connections
  • You don't mind a longer travel day

We wouldn't recommend it for everyone

After a long international flight, multiple transfers with suitcases can turn a relatively straightforward two-hour-plus drive into a much longer journey.

Families, travelers arriving later in the day, visitors carrying significant luggage and first-time Belize travelers may find a shuttle much easier.

Which BZE-to-Hopkins Option Should You Choose?

There isn't one transportation option that's perfect for everyone.

Choose a private shuttle if:
You want the simplest door-to-door experience.

Choose a shared shuttle if:
You're traveling solo or want to reduce your transfer cost and don't mind waiting.

Choose the domestic flight if:
You enjoy flying and find a connection to Dangriga that works well with your international arrival.

Choose a rental car if:
You plan to explore Belize independently during your vacation.

Choose an airport taxi if:
You need transportation after arriving without a pre-arranged transfer.

Choose the public bus if:
Keeping transportation costs as low as possible is more important than speed or convenience.

Our Advice for First-Time Visitors

If this is your first trip to Belize, don't wait until you land to figure out how you're getting to Hopkins.

Arrange your transportation before your vacation.

At minimum, have these details ready:

  • Airline name
  • Flight number
  • Arrival date
  • Scheduled arrival time
  • Number of passengers
  • Hopkins accommodation
  • WhatsApp number or other contact information

If your flight is delayed, contact your transportation provider as soon as the airline notifies you.

Pre-arranging everything means that once you walk out of the airport, you're not comparing transportation options while carrying your luggage.

You can simply start your journey south.
